I adore Frida Kahlo and I think it's wonderful that the fourth assignment for my creativity course, I get to analysis one of her self portraits that I really admire.
I wanted to share my view on the symbolic meaning of the animals in her artwork titled Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (Kahlo, 1940).
dragonfly symbolizes self-realization
pre-Hispanic folklore belief that migrating butterflies carried the souls of ancestors visiting from the afterlife
monkey symbolizes adaptability
black cats are spiritual guardians & protectors
dark/dead hummingbird symbolizes rebirth
